The final transmission: Mayor's Diary for 24th May 2007 - as published by the Wells Journal

Mayor’s Diary

Sadly, this is the last transmission from me as your Mayor. As the new Mayor has been installed, I've taken the opportunity to dash away for a holiday. I'm typing this at 4:30am on Sunday 20th May as I'm awaiting my flight from Gatwick to Corsica.

It has been a great honour and privilege for me to serve you as your Mayor. Over the last 12 months I have notched up over 430 meetings, events and engagements. In the Mayor's Parlour, I have welcomed over 650 visitors at least once. It has been a full on year, which I must say has been the best year of my life....

This week, for the last time, I have attended 8 meetings, events and engagements as your Mayor.

On Wednesday I assisted Andre in his own restaurant to serve a three course meal to 30 paying customers. I learnt how to make the perfect mashed potato.

I had three engagements on Thursday. First was to welcome visitors from our twined town of Pary Le Monial. After a drinks reception, I took them on a tour of the Mayor's Parlour.

Later that afternoon, I hosted another tour of the Town Hall for students from the University of Virginia.

In the evening the Mayoress and I hosted a reception for Wells FC to celebrate their success in winning the Somerset Cup after almost 70 years. Well done lads. The cup is proudly displayed in the Town Hall, so please come in and have a look.

On Friday the Mayoress and I hosted a party at The Swan Hotel to say thank you to the many people who supported us during the year. It was a very emotional evening. Thank you to all of our guests for coming along.

So that is it I'm afraid. One marvelous year has zoomed by. Again thank you for your unreserved and unconditional support. I still can't believe I was allowed to be your Mayor....

My speech before standing down as the 633rd Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells as delivered in the Royal Courts at Wells Town Hall on 19th May 2007

Final speech for 19th May 2007

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen.

What an honour it has been, to be elected the 633rd Right Worshipful Mayor of Wells.

I would like to thank all of those people, who have given me their personal and professional support since taking office.

It is comforting to know everyone here today and many who are not; have helped and assisted me over the year.

This year for me has been very different, very lively and very special.

PAUSE

When I set out to do this role I wasn’t too sure what was involved.

I’ve always been a fast learner – which was a good skill to have as my first engagement was on the Sunday after being made Mayor.

I can remember turning up at Studio Psalm for their relaunch. I was very nervous – in fact when I cut the ribbon – I actually forgot the name of the shop and called it something completely different! This wouldn’t have been too bad if I hadn’t said it over a microphone with 40 people assembled!

Anyway, that kick started over 430 meetings, events and engagements – right up until this afternoon.

I can remember some conversation when I first became Mayor on how I would fare.

There was I think a mixed bag of opinion. Now, it’s for the history books to deicide how I’ve done over all.

I can’t list all of the people, groups and businesses that I have met and seen….there is seriously too many.

I would though, like to reflect on a line I used in my inaugural speech which is taken from a former Mayor’s speech.

In 2004, Cllr. Colin Price finished his year with an account of his activities at Mayor Making.

One of the many things he said was, and I quote: “…you never really know your own town, until you become it’s Mayor”.

This was said by a man who was born and bred in Wells.

PAUSE

I quoted that in my inaugural speech as I thought it was an excellent way to describe the journey I was to embark upon.

Well Colin – you were spot on! I’ve learnt a lot.

The best bits? Without meaning to sound corny, they were all best bits.

I was able to mix with people from the very top of society along to those who have fallen on hard times and need the support of society to get back on track.

I think I managed to cover the whole of society as it exists in Wells today.

Everything I done, I tried to keep within my four objectives. They were:

· 1st: Highlighting issues that surround young people
· 2nd: Encouragement and sustainability of continuing growth in our Market Town economy
· 3rd: Supporting the many organisations that are a vital part of the fabric of Wells
· 4th: Maintaining a safe environment

It has been a very busy year – for which I can’t really find a word to describe it.

You could use perhaps ‘Awesome’, perhaps ‘Great’, perhaps ‘Magnificent’. What ever word one chooses, it doesn’t really explain what the year meant for me.

It struck me the amount of commitment shown not just by residents, not just by people who trade in the City, not just by people who visit, not just by those who live around the City – but by everyone who has ever known or visited Wells – the jewel in the Somerset crown.

Wells was once described to me as like ‘living in a postcard’.

During this year, I discovered there is a lot more to the City than that

Behind our wonderful architecture, lies a vibrant, cosmopolitan, respectful, spirited, established and caring community

As a market town, Wells trades in a whole load of commodities. Some of which are sadly missing in the wider world;

o We trade in COMPASSION

o We trade in COMMITMENT

o We trade in SPORTS

o We trade in ECONOMICS

o We trade in GOVERNANCE

o We trade in RELIGION

o We trade in MUSIC

Whilst it’s easy to pretend that in Wells we ‘don’t do social issues’

The strong community spirit forces a sense of social responsibility to ensure that when things don’t go quite to plan in someone’s life – there is always a support group around the corner

Wells is changing and developing – perhaps it always has done

This may be a shock for some – however if you think about it – you don’t exist successfully for over 800 years without the occasional make over

I hope it continues to change and move forward

After today, I hope we can all reflect on what Wells had, what it has got now and what it will have in the future

So after being your Mayor, what will I miss?

Well loads to be fair!!

The most obvious thing is my chain…or Bling as I like to call it.

Also The Mayor’s Parlour which is a wonderful room and the setting for quite a few events at all hours of the day… and early morning! Some of you in this room have not had the privilege of the Mayor’s Tour of the Town Hall and cells. Believe me – you missed a real treat. Just ask any of my friends!!!! I learnt during the year – that before the Mayor’s Parlour was created, previous Mayor’s had to entertain at home….now anyone who has EVER visited my house knows that (despite my cleaner’s best efforts) I only really tidy when my Mum comes to visit!!!

But it’s the people aspect that I’ll miss the most. Having a licence to ask any question of anybody is wonderful when discovering what makes people tick!

PAUSE

As I said earlier, I have many people to thank. They are too many in numbers for me to thank individually. So If I miss anyone out on my next part of the speech – I really do appreciate what you did for me and all of the unreserved and unconditional support you have given.

Firstly I would like to offer my deepest thanks to all of my staff in Pickwicks. Without whom, my Mayoral year would not of run as smoothly as it did. I know many of the team moved their work patterns around so I could do my role.

I would also like also reflect on the sad loss of one member of staff. Ann Wain died a couple of months ago after a battle with cancer. Ann brought much to Pickwicks – but in terms of her support for my Mayoral year, it was 110%. No matter how long I needed to do a visit for or how little notice I had for a reception – Ann would without question, rally and do the business.

Ann spent the whole year nagging, mothering and generally looking out for me. Ann is very much missed.

PAUSE

I have not seen much of my family over the past year. Spending both Christmas and Easter on duty meant that visits were few and far between.
I very much missed my family, especially my nephew Stanley (who celebrated his first birthday only one month ago).

However I knew that they have given me their full support and love.

PAUSE

Thanks must now go to the longest and deepest suffering group of people who know me – my friends!

They have put up with my ranting, reading my blog, babbling on about maces, chains and standing orders. They’ve put up with me continuously talking about my diary, the last and next reception and nattering about how Councillors behaved in meetings….

My friends have also put up with me not being around as much as I would have been. Through all of this they are all still talking to me and no doubt feel relief my year is now at an end.

Amongst the support they gave – They kept my feet on the ground.

They ensured that being Mayor didn’t go to my head – and if it did – I was left in no uncertain terms how unimpressed they were.

That is the job of true friends. I’m truly appreciative for all they did for me.

My friends also kept me fed (because I still can’t cook) and watered throughout the year – ensuring that I was never left alone or without someone to speak to.

PAUSE

My three charities for this year: Macmillan Support, YMCA Spencer House and the RUH CT Scanner Appeal have all been wonderful. They have all supported me and allowed me to take part in many activities. For the RUH we had the James Bond night – for Macmillan Support I attended their coffee mornings and assisted in street collections.

I can still remember being in Spencer House for the week – seeing how a young person would live there. I tried to cook some food one night and set the fire alarms off three times. It took over 45 minutes to clear the room of smoke.

All of the charities supported me and allowed me to take part in many activities.

There have been many businesses who have supported my over my year too. They include:

· The Silver Studio who supplied my cufflinks and various presents. Keith and Lesley have been fabulous in selecting presents and cufflinks for me (often with vague details on what I want and usually very little time)!
· Thanks to The National Schoolwear Centre who supplied my embroidered suit carrier, shoe bag, rutsack and many other t shirts and polo tops. Sally Robertson very kindly allowed me to change in her changing rooms from my works stuff into suit and bling (which was almost daily)! In the summer, Sally also supplied some emergency white shirts (fully pressed and often within half an hour’s notice).
· Of course I can’t forget the service I have had from Christina and Joe Borastero. Wells Dry Cleaners have ensured that my suits and best shirts have been spotless and maintained. They adjusted all of my suits for the chain and have promised to sow them back up. They have also had to manage the constant flow of table cloths from the Mayor’s Parlour as there are alsorts of stains on them…..!!!

None of my receptions and parties would ever have taken place without the help of people giving out the drink and nibbles. I would like to thank Rosemary Swales; Stan Weatherhead and Stephanie Webb for their help in this respect.

I would never have got to or from anything without the help of Lizzie’s partner Neil Levington who ensured Wookey Taxis were on call – however I soon discovered they don’t do past 3 o’clock in the morning and it can be a jolly long walk home!

There are many in the Town Hall I would like to thank.

First I would like to thank the City Councillors – both those who served before the elections and afterwards; for their support during meetings (for which I was always very nervous).

I would like to thank Kevin, Nick and Bruce who helped keep my Parlour together and who sorted the Town Hall for various events.

Special thanks must go to William, the City Archivist, who assisted me with various documents and presentations.

The Town Crier, Len Swales has also been a very active person within my year. Len helped at many receptions as well as receiving guests at the Town Hall. Len’s strongest skill was putting people at ease and caring about my guests. Many thanks Len for your support.

Without this next person – I would have been very lost. Lizzie Webb acted as my Diary Secretary for the whole year. She ensured that everything was put in place and nothing clashed.

Lizzie soon got very used to the Mayor over promising himself – which required a whole load of diplomacy to change around timings. Without Lizzie I would have lost most of my tickets and could never have organised many of the amazing engagements I embarked upon.

Lizzie was also the Mace Bearer for the Council. I would like to thank her for adding this job onto her many other pressing roles!!

PAUSE – present flowers

Gill Weatherhead was my Sergeant-at-Mace for the year. Gill not only supported me at many receptions but also escorted me on civic events. Gill’s attention to detail ensured the Council’s protocol was followed and maintained. Many thanks Gill for the hard work.

PAUSE – present flowers

I would now like to thank the Town Clerk Keith Donoghue for his advice and counsel over the year. There are often many pitfalls that arise – for which he managed to steer me past all of them.

We had and have an excellent professional relationship – which sometimes meant we disagreed. However, with a focus upon the bigger picture, all ended up well in the end.

Keith, thank you for your support and may I wish you the very best of luck in your marriage to Maggie Holcroft next month.

PAUSE

One of the most important roles surrounding the Mayoralty is the Chaplain. For which, I think, I got the very best you can get.

Dr. Lavinia Byrne has performed the role of Chaplain wonderfully.

As well as being a Chaplain – Lavinia has also acted as Consort to various events.

Lavinia has given me support and a friendly ear throughout my year. She has given me wise advice on matters not just concerning the Mayoralty – but also my wider world. Thank you Lavinia for everything, you’ve been amazing.

PAUSE – present the Chaplain’s wine basket

That then leaves me with just one other person to thank. It’s someone who has shouted at me when needed (and sometimes when not), someone who was continuously looking out for me and someone who just wanted to chat to me. It is of course my Mayoress and friend, Julie Nicholas.

Julie (who is married to Martin), was called Mrs. Davies – Julie Nichols or just ‘a guest’. We often had great fun trying to explain that Julie was married to someone else and just a friend of mine. The expressions on people’s faces often said “yeah right – bet your trying to keep this one quiet Mr Mayor”.

Julie has joined me in many of the events I was either invited to or initiated. One of which was my idea to cycle around the Carnival route. This was great fun…for me – but less so for Julie! I have been told that she reserves the right to get her own back for that one and believe me she will!

Julie was never afraid to tell me that I boring other people or speaking a load of gibberish – or that I looked a complete prat in a panama hat!

So Julie, I have been very lucky to have you as my Mayoress – thank you for your love and support. It has been very appreciated…..

PAUSE – present the Mayoress badge

Well ladies and gentlemen, that is it……

Just before this satellite finally falls out of range and all the screens at the Command Centre go snowy – I would like to say to every resident and supporter of our City; that you all ‘DO’ for Wells and very much ‘DID’ for me…….A VERY BIG THANKYOU for that!

I’ve come to the end, I’ve finished, I’ve completed the course, I’ve done the deed….

It has been the best year of my life. Thank you for being here at the end.

As they say on Hot Fuzz (for which I’m on the credits) “For the Greater Good”. I hope this year has been……

My Final Speech as Mayor delivered at the 'Final Hurrah' party at The Swan Hotel, Wells on 18th May 2007

Final speech for 18th May 2007

I would like to thank all of those people, who have given me their personal and professional support since taking office.

Well Colin – you were spot on! I’ve learnt a lot.

The best bits? Well again many in number but those that really stick out are (in no particular order); The Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, Bad Durkheim, Dinner with the Bishop of Bath & Wells, Boxing in Kudos, visiting the ATC (including hosting a reception for visiting cadets from Canada), Meeting HRH Princess Anne, Wells Thanksgiving Service & the Celebration of The Queen’s 80th Birthday at St. Cuthberts Church, various events including a march through the City with the Royal British Legion, visiting the Cathedral School and attending many of their concerts and Assemblies, the RUH James Bond night, the Wells Stroke Club, opening a floatation tank, the Little Theatre performances, Byrnes Night, Wells FC Cup Final, various receptions for School Governors - the Special Constabulary – the sports clubs – John Lewis partnership – WI - primary school councils and attending four churches and a Cathedral over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day….

The list goes on and on…….

Everything I done, I tried to keep within my four objectives. They were:

I’ve had receptions, meetings, pizza nights, curry nights, birthday parties, New Years Party, Gin & Vodka Night, celebration evenings and a space to read my paper on Sunday early afternoon with a beer and Cornish pasty!!!!

But it’s the people aspect that I’ll miss the most. Having a licence to ask any question of anybody is wonderful when discovering what makes people tick!

Mayor's Diary for 17th May 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

Mayor’s Diary

After this diary entry there will only be one left. I’m going have to have to think of something else to do on a Monday evening now.

Over the past week I’ve attended 11 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Tuesday, Wells Archery Club invited me along to one of their evenings at the Sports Ground. I had a great time. I managed to get all of my arrows onto the target and fired several into the centre. Not quite Robin Hood, but on my way there.

I had three engagements on Thursday. First it was off, with my Chaplain, to the Royal British Legion Lunch at St. Thomas’ Hall. Then it was off to Fletcher House for Pauline Leyton’s ‘surprise’ leaving party. Pauline has done so much for many people in Fletcher House. I know she will be missed.

In the evening I chaired the first full City Council meeting of this term. On the Council we now have 10 re-elected Councillor’s and 6 new ones (including the Mayoress).

On Friday I helped draw the 1940’s raffle for the RUH (which is one of my charities) and then it was off to the launch of Ron Thompson’s new shop in Broad Street.

There were two events on Saturday. First I assisted in the street collection for Macmillan Support, which is also one of my charities. Much of the collecting was done in the pouring rain. Later in the evening I attended a charity dinner at the Rugby Club.

On Sunday, with the rain pouring down yet again – I was collected from work in a wonderful vintage car and taken to the Mendip Car Rally on Cathedral Green. I had an excellent time walking around the parked cars, for which I had to pick my favourite. This year I selected an Aston Martin DB24. The car just looked stunning.

After the rally, I attended the Christian Aid Launch Week in St. Thomas’ Church. As usual it was a nice service which focused upon El Salvador.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings (including the Annual Parish Meeting), cooking at Andre’s, meeting people form Paray Le Monial (our twinned town), hosting a visit by students from Virginia, hosting a celebration reception for Wells City FC and holding my final party – ‘The Last Hurrah’.

Mayor's Diary for 10th May 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

Mayor’s Diary

By the time you’ve read this, I’ll be into my final 10 days as your Mayor. I’ve still got a cramped diary - some of which I’m going to have to do after my term has finished.

Over the past week I’ve attended 8 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Wednesday, my Chaplain and I visited Fletcher House to open a Summerhouse which had been kindly donated by a Gladys Townley. It was a wonderful day, totally suitable for the garden and the Summerhouse.

Thursday was taken up with local elections. I would like to thank all of those people who voted for me in both the City and Mendip ballots.

On Friday, I hosted a visit by St. Cuthbert’s Primary School to the Town Hall. First we visited the Parlour and then it was off to the Courts and cells. After all that, Richard Green took us on a tour of the fair.

Saturday morning saw the Mayoress, my Chaplain and the whole Council open the May Fair. I really enjoy this event as we all get to go on the dodgems and other rides. Your Mayor was particularly brave to ride on the ‘Freddie’s Revenge’. I got my colour back soon afterwards.

After the rides we attended a brunch in The Swan Hotel. Many thanks to James Rogers for organising the morning.

On Bank Holiday Monday I opened the Cathedral Green May Fair, organised by Wells Action. Although it was raining very hard when I opened the fair, it all soon changed and dried up.

After that I watched the Air Training Corp perform drill in the Market Place. Then I lead school children from the Town Hall to the May Pole for their traditional dance.

I then drove to Western Super Mare to watch Wells FC beat Burnham 2 – 1 at the Cup Final. Well done to Wells FC for such a brilliant game and brining the cup back to Wells after 67 years. As you can imagine, the whole club had a wonderful party afterwards.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings (including full City Council), a visit to the Archery Club, Royal British Legion lunch, Chamber of Commerce dinner, the Classic Car Rally and the Christian Aid Week service.

Sunday 6 May 2007

Mayor's Diary for 3rd May 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

Over the past week I’ve attended 7 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Tuesday alongside the Carnival Princess, I gave several cheques to local organisations raised from last year’s carnival. The Carnival Princess very much enjoyed handing out so much money. Well done to Wells Carnival Committee for raising the money.

Wednesday saw two events. First, my Chaplain and I attended the first Wells Royal British Legion Tea Dance at Kudos. Many attended and everyone had a good time.

Later that evening, the Mayoress and I attended a dinner with the Bishop and his wife Dee. We had a wonderful evening and a lovely tour of his chapel.

On Thursday I attended the relaunch of Bloomsbury Heath Suite in Broad Street. The business has just moved to new offices and it’s looking great. After that, I went along to the Wells Young Gay & Lesbian Group, to talk about my role as Mayor.

On Sunday I attended the installation of The Bishop of Taunton and Wells Cathedral’s first female Archdeacon, Nicola Sullivan. Nicola overturned 1000 years of history to have this post. Well done to her for the appointment.

On Monday, the Mayoress, my Chaplain and I attended Wells Cathedral School assembly. The assembly was held in the Cathedral and was in front of the whole senior school. It was a wonderful morning.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, Media training, opening of a Summerhouse in Fletcher House, local elections, opening the Fun Fair, Maypole Dancing and watching Wells FC play their first Cup Final in Western-Super-Mare.

All she wanted to do was to give out the money.....I just stood there!

Today I spent the morning in Pickwicks. This afternoon I took a half day!!

Int he afternoon, I updated my diary in the Town Hall. This was good as there is much still to do over the next couple of weeks. Only have until 19th May to do my thing!!

At 1900hrs I attended the Wells Carnival cheque presentation evening. this was the money that was raise at our night time carnival (held every year). the Chairman of Wells Carnival gave out cheque to the value of £6500.

Many organisation benefited from the cheques. It was great to see so many organisations that I have visited over the year there!!

The cheques were meant to be given out between the Carnival Queen and myself. However, the Carnival Queen quite enjoyed giving out money - so she issued all the money! I just stood there and smiled.

After that, three of us went for a curry........

The whole weekend.......

On friday my Chaplain and I attended the West Mendip Opportunity Group auction. It was a great evening.

I brought a table top football game and a massage! Sadly when I got the ticket for the massage, I found out it was for ladies only!!! tut....was looking forward to that!

Anyway, had a great evening - which raised about £1500!! Embarrassing part of the evening was me forgetting the organiser's name...(which is Denise by the way).

Saturday the Mayoress and I attended the Wells Lion's Charter night. This was a brilliant evening. We had loads to eat and really did enjoy ourselves. The raffle went on a little too long - but we raised loads of money for the charities.

On Sunday St. Cuthbert's Church held the Thanksgiving to Wells service. The service was my idea to celebrate were Wells is at the moment. We have a lot in the City regarding our past - but not enough to do with the future and now!

After the service the Vicar invited some of us back to the Vicarage for afternoon drinks. What a wonderful way to end a hot day!

On Monday I lead a civic party to watch the first night of HMS Pinafore at the Little Theatre in Wells. As Mayor, I am President of the association. As part of the role, the President is allowed to invite 14 other people to watch the spring performance. Anyway, we all enjoyed the play and wondered at the amount of time and effort put into the whole performance.

Mayor's Diary for 19th April 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

By the time you have read this my nephew will have had his first birthday. Can’t believe it was a year ago that we as a family first saw him. Although I’m not able to be there for his birthday, I hope to see him quite soon. Every time I see him, he has changed so much.

Over the past week I’ve attended 4 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

Most of my engagements this week were taken up with meetings.

However the highlight for this week was to visit the Wells Stroke Club at the EMI Club on Monday.

As a special treat to club members, one of the UK’s top Harpist’s, John Doulton, played a mini concert. It was a wonderful way to spend late morning. I felt so relaxed after listening to the music – I didn’t feel like returning to work afterwards.

In the evening I hosted a reception in the Mayor’s Parlour for some local residents who supported me during my Mayoral year and during my years as a Councillor.

More on my week can be found on my blog, www.mow633.blogspot.com.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, a visit by Wookey Primary School to the Mayor’s Parlour, a reception for Tele PA, a visit by my Mum (better tidy my house first), Opportunity Playgroup Charity Auction, Lion’s Charter Night, A Celebration of Wells in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Civic Night at the Little Theatre to watch ‘HMS Pinafore’.

Tuesday 17 April 2007

I'm not a hippy now......

Today was a busy day in Pickwicks and for me as Mayor.

At 1100hrs I hosted a visit by the Wookey Primary School. The children had just visited the Cathedral.

When they arrived we had a photo for the local paper. Then it was up to the Mayor's Parlour.

First to make a presentation was the City Archivist. He showed all the children our Royal charters. We had to do this first as they were all about to be fed drinks and cakes. The 800 year old documents don't really 'do' chocolate cake.

After the documents were safely stored away, my Mace Bearer and I guided the children through the role as Mayor, our maces and other parts of civic items.

After all that, we went to the Parkes Room and then to the Crown Courts and the cells.

They all appeared to enjoy the visit.

After all that, I spent some time updating my diary with my Diary Secretary. My diary is increasingly getting mega busy. I might as well just take loads of time off between now and 19th May.

After that I went to Leon's to have my hair cut. I now don't look like a hippy and have a 'summer cut'.

Then it was off to 'High & Wild' to start looking at a holiday after I've finished being Mayor. I spoke to Mark who seems to have loads of ideas for my break! I can't wait......

In the evening I was meant to be hosting a reception for Tele PA. Tele PA are a local company that won a couple of business awards last year. To celebrate this, I offered to host a reception.

With their and my diary very busy - it has taken up til now to get sorted. Anyway, no one turned up. I'll sort it out tomorrow! No doubt my fault somewhere along the line......

A blue reception

Monday was a quiet day in Pickwicks as it was the first day after the Easter holidays.

In the evening I hosted a reception for Wells Conservative Branch. We had an excellent evening.

This is the first of a trio of events. The Labour and Liberal Democrat parties will also be attending a reception after the local elections.

Curry and BBQ - and I forgot to bet on the Grand National

Update for the weekend...

The whole weekend was wonderfully hot in Wells. This meant that a lot of people were taking advantage of the Easter holiday and BBQ's!!

On Friday night I joined four friends for dinner in The Strode Arms in Cranmore. We had a wonderful meal, which we always have when visiting there.

On Saturday, after a gentile day at work (the Grand National didn't help), went out for the evening with a friend of mine Steph. We went for a curry in Cafe Romna (a first for Steph) and then off to Kudos for the rest of the night.

As usual we had an entertaining evening seeing alsorts in the club!!

On Sunday I opened Pickwicks for our first sunday trading day. It wasn't very busy, but neither was the rest of the city. I sent my staff home in stages. The last one left at 1500hrs.

Shockingly, after 1500hrs - I had more customers during that time than in the rest of the day! All by myself. Closed at 1600hrs.

Later that evening I joined a former employee of mine Dale Atkinson at his family's BBQ. The BBQ was in aid of Dale's Gran's 80th Birthday. Although Dale doesn't work for me any more, his brother does. He still keeps in touch.

Mayor's Diary for 12th April 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

Only five more weeks to go until the end of my year and loads more to see and do.

One of my last major events will be the 1940’s night on 11th May. The event is a fundraiser for one of my charities, the RUH CT Scanner Appeal. Tickets can be obtained from ‘Sense’ on 01749 670121.

Over the past week I’ve attended 3 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

Wednesday at noon was the cut off for nominations for candidates who wish to stand for election on 3rd May. All of the seats across the City for Mendip District Council are being contested. At the time of writing, those standing for the City Council are being processed. However, may I take this opportunity to wish all of the candidates the ‘very best of British’ in the elections.

On Thursday I chaired the last full City Council meeting before the elections. During the meeting we had several constructive debates about delivering services to the residents of the city.

As far as I know Cllrs. Blundell, Sapstead, Sommers and Woods are retiring from the council. May I use this opportunity to thank them for their service over the years.

I would especially like to thank on behalf of the City Cllr. Blundell for her work with Wells Museum and Cllr. Sapstead for services to Mendip District Council for Central Ward and his expertise on the Wells City Planning committee.

On Easter Sunday my Chaplain, Lavinia Byrne made a wonderful roast dinner for the Mayoress, myself and some other friends.

On Monday I opened the Garden Party at the Sherston Inn. It was a wonderful day with sunshine and loads of fun things for people of all ages to do. Well done to Matt and Sarah for organising such a superb event. More on the day can be found on my blog, http://www.mow633.blogspot.com/.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, Macmillan Support meeting and a reception in the Mayor’s Parlour.

Thursday 12 April 2007

Sorting my Tanksgiving Service

Had a very busy day in Pickwicks on Wednesday. It was market day here in sunny (and very warm Wells).

After work, I met with Rev. Peter Farrell (St. Cuthbert's Church) and Lavinia Byrne (my Chaplain). The meeting was to decide on the order of service for my 'Thanksgiving Service' on 22nd April 2007.

The service is to celebrate Wells and all those who keep it running! Both Lavinia and Peter are experts at this. Thanks to both of them for their support and ideas.

After that, I spent time on my computer updating staff contracts, listening to '18 Doughty Street' (the political internet TV station) and looking at eMails.

Then off to bed...

Wednesday 11 April 2007

LAT and curry

Tuesday went quite fast in Pickwicks. We had a good day trading as well as getting loads of other bits done!!

Half way through the day, I was able to pop into the Town Hall to update my diary for the coming weeks ahead.

I learnt who was standing for the City Council. All four candidates for the 'Central Ward' will be elected unopposed. Those standing in St. Cuthberts Ward and St. Thomas' Ward face elections. There will be seven candidates standing in each ward.

In the evening I attended the LAT's meeting in the Mayor's Parlour. This was a very good meeting, especially since we got loads done!! The LAT's have never been a talking shop...good to see the 'work and no chat' format still works. Well Done to Simon Selby for continuing to chair it!

After the meeting, Simon and myself went for a curry!! Just what was called for.....

Monday 9 April 2007

Sherston Inn had bouncy castles - not even the Mayor was allowed to go on!!

Went into Pickwicks for the first couple of hours. Felt a bit tired after the 'Pink Gin' introduction the night before!!

Anyway at midday I went to the Sherston Inn to open their charity Garden Party. It was a fantastic afternoon with loads going on.

Every age group was catered for, including bouncy castles and face painting. Live music was playing in the background.

It was a well organised day - and I hope the charities and the Sherston Inn benefit!

After all that, I took some sandwiches upto the area above Milton Lane. It was really peaceful up there and great just to relax and read the paper!

Pink Gin and curried cabbage....Nathan just got drunk!

I had a really nice weekend...despite working in Pickwicks. It was a good Easter weekend!

On Saturday, trade was very good and it was full on as usual.

In the evening we had Nathan Truckle's leaving party. We started off with drinks in the Mayor's Parlour. About 12 members of staff came along. I gave them a brief tour of the Town Hall too (lucky people)!!

After the Parlour we had a couple of drinks in The Crown Inn and then off to Kudos nightclub.

When we got to the club there was quite a queue to get in. However, as I'm a VIP card holder (not too sure how it worked) I walked passed the queue and straight in without paying.... cool or what?? With the card I'm allowed one guest...which was Nathan as it was his party.

Left there at about 0300hrs after an excellent evening.

On Easter Sunday (after tidying the Parlour), my Chaplain invited me and some others for supper.

Lavinia had cooked an excellent roast. She is a fantastic cook (had a very curried cabbage). Also invited was the Mayoress, Anthea, Hillary and Martin.

During the evening I got used to drinking 'pink gin'. Wow....what a taste! Going to try that more often. Will buy some bitters during the week.

Friday 6 April 2007

Got the last meeting over and done with....then off for a BBQ burger (heated up in the microwave)

Blog updated on Good Friday!!

At least I'm trying to keep up to date with it all. Had a reasonable day in Pickwicks. We had some very nice weather, which meant the City Centre was rather quiet.

We opened for 'Sunday' hours which is 1000hrs until 1600hrs. Ho hum.... can't win them all! Anyway, I suspect the Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday trade will be busy.

Last night (Thursday 5th April 2007) I chaired the final City Council meeting before the local elections on 3rd May.

We had a very constructive meeting, despite some interference! I particularly enjoyed the police report. Our new Beat Manager, PC Spencer Scott, is really proving to be an excellent appointment. He has a good feel for the issues, despite being in post for only a few months.

There were some very nice words from Mr Hudsmith and Cllr. Colin Price about me! I was quite embarrassed. A big thanks for their recognition.....

On behalf of the City I said good bye and a thankyou to four Councillors who are retiring at the election (some others may also retire, but that is up to the public). Cllrs Blundell, Sapstead, Sommers and Woods are not standing for election.

I especially wanted to say thank you to Cllr. Blundell (Lib Dem) for her work on the Council, in Civic Services and representing the council on the Wells Museum committee. Also Cllr. Saptead (Conservative) for his work on the City & District Councils, in Civic Services and his professional expertise on the council's planning committee.

After the meeting, I popped into the Mayoress and her husband for supper - which ended up being a BBQ sausage and burger!! Nice!!

Mayor's Diary for 5th April 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

Well spring is definitely here. The weather is improving and people are wearing short sleeved shirts and shorts. As you approach the City, many of the flowers are blooming, which gives our visitors a wonderful sense of Wells as they arrive.

This week is Easter and the long holiday (even longer for those at school). For the record I don’t really ‘do’ chocolate, so my eggs are put into my fridge for a while. However the Mayoress loves anything chocolate – and quite gladly eats all mine. Shocking isn’t it?

Over the past week I’ve attended 6 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Wednesday I had two events. The first was a series of three presentations to members of the John Lewis Coffee Club, from Southampton. 60 members came to Wells for the day, including a former Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester. The connection here is that my Aunt is part of this club as she had worked for John Lewis (aka Tyrell & Green of Southampton) for about 30 years. My family had a strong connection with the old store.

In fact a couple of the visitors recognised me. It didn’t help that my over zealous Aunt was part of it all. Why does each family have a mad Aunt? More on the visit can be found on my blog, www.mow633.blogspot.com.

Later that evening I attended the Mendip Business Forum in Rook Chapel, Frome. I gave a presentation to the group on the affect the filming of Hot Fuzz had on the City. I based my talk around the general feeling that the filming was for the greater good.

On Thursday, the Mayoress and I attended a concert in the Cathedral hosted by Wells Cathedral School. It was a wonderful evening, which featured some of the best young talent you can find in this country.

I launched the Scout Hut Appeal on Friday, by drawing their raffle. The first prize was a super size egg. There was enough chocolate in there to keep a few people happy.

On Monday, I hosted the inaugural meeting of the Mendip Ladies Group. We had buck fizz on arrival, followed by me giving a guide around the Mayoralty and our civic regalia.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings (including a full City Council meeting) and an Easter Party at the Sherston Inn.

Only two candidates - may be we should use the boxing ring...it's good value!!

Had a very good day's trading today. Wasn't expecting it to be as busy! Everyone worked well as a team, especially the new chaps!!

At mid day today, the close of nominations for the local elections meant that it was too late for any more candidates to throw their hat into the ring. All the seats in Mendip are being contested.

In St Thomas ward there will only be Conservative and Lib Dem candidates seeking election to Mendip. This I think is a great shame, as more people ought to be encouraged to stand.

Not too sure about who is standing for City Council yet...but will do tomorrow!!

Later this evening at 1900hrs, I visited the Wells Boxing Club at the Cold Store. They have a great facility down there and have members spanning all ages and backgrounds. Some members just want to get fit...others to box. At £3 for adults and £2 for children, it does seem excellent value.

The club is run to the highest standards, so risk of harm is as reduced as it can be. They have big plans for the future.....I hope they succeed!!

Ann Wain's funeral

Tuesday was a sad day in Pickwicks. It was the day of Ann Wain's funeral.

The cafe opened at 0800hrs and usual, but closed between 1000hrs and 1400hrs. This was to allow everyone to attend.

The funeral was held in Wookey Hole in their splendid church. There was only standing room. It was nice to meet her nieces.

The service was very Ann. Connie, one of Ann's closest and dearest friends gave a moving view of her friendship with Ann. It finished with a lovely poem.

After the service, we were all invited to the Wookey Hole Tea Rooms, which is owned and run by another of Ann's friends Theresa. It was a nice way to end a moving experience.

I was very impressed by the lads who attended from Pickwicks. As they are late teens, many have not been to a funeral before. Sadly, it'll be an experience they'll get used to!!

Later that evening, I attended the Skate park meeting in the Mayor's Parlour and then a meeting for the RUH 1940's night.

That night promises to be fantastic. Tickets are going well, but need to sell more..... so if you can come along on 11th May, be glad to see you.

I gave the ladies one.... a talk that is!!

On Monday we had the first day of the school Easter holidays! Wasn't that busy trade wise... Had two new people start. One for the coffee machine and the other for washing up.

During the morning I hosted the inaugural meeting of the Mendip Ladies Group. This is basically a breakaway WI!!

Sue Drew, one of the organisers, laid on the drinks which included bucks fizz. I gave the ladies a talk about the Mayoralty and a tour of the Parkes Room. Am getting quite good at this now!!

Later that evening, I attended the Wells Chamber of Commerce meeting in the City Arms. I was elected Vice Chairman. The current Chairman, Sally Robertson, has really pulled the group around. Well done to her!!

Brief overview of Friday to Sunday....

I know....I know.... no one will read the blog if I don't keep it up to date!!!

I've have been really busy over the past week!!

Anyway, as a catch up....

On Friday the Mayoress and I attended the Wells Cathedral School Symphonic Journey - which is an Easter concert put on by the school.

As usual, it was superb! It encouraged me to join the Wells Concert Friends. This means you get advanced notice of concerts and events. Well, I must admit, I haven't quite sent off my form....but I will.

After the wonderful concert and having the opportunity to meet Michael Evis, we went over to Cedar House for drinks. A wonderful end to a brilliant evening.

On Saturday I hosted an evening in the Mayor's Parlour for my former colleagues from Great Mills. We often get together for a curry or Chinese. This time, it was my turn to host.

We met in The Crown and then ordered either pizza or curry. After finishing our take aways, I gave the group a tour of the Town Hall and a talk on the Mayoralty.

Both Tony and Marian are really into history, so they enjoyed it!! Was great to see Marian Duke, Tony Jones and Jane Brine (alongside their partners).

After they all went home, I went for a drink in Kudos (as it was the only place open at 0130hrs). Sadly, my coat was given to the wrong person by the cloakroom attendant. However, all was sorted by Sunday lunchtime and I had my coat back!!

Just chilled for the rest of Sunday!!

Friday 30 March 2007

I could talk for hours...well actually I almost did!!

On Wednesday I took half day from Pickwicks.... having loads of time off this week!! Although most of it to be fair is doing my Mayoral role....which is work before certain people say anything!!

Spent the afternoon hosting three presentations in the Mayor's Parlour for the Southampton branch of the John Lewis Coffee Club. Basically this is a group of retired John Lewis employees from the old Tyrell & Green (aka John Lewis).

My Aunt worked and retired with the company. As a company they really do look after their employees (including the retired ones).

About 60 members visited Wells for the day. About 50 of them wanted to see Pickwicks and me as Mayor.

So I did three presentations in the Parlour on the role of Mayor and a brief history of the City.

They all loved it...and collected over #110 for one of my charities (Macmillan Support).

My Aunt came along to the final of the presentations, which she then insisted on being next to me in all of the photo's! One of the groups even included a former Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester!! He knew his stuff.......we couldn't make anything up with him in the room.

After the presentations, I left Wells to got to Frome for another presentation. This time was to tell an audience of business people, how Wells coped with the filming of Hot Fuzz. The Chairman did bill me as a 'star'!!. I said this wasn't the case, however I did get credited!

I spent about 25min explaining the events that unfolded. I particularly mentioned the part our Town Clerk played in ensuring the smooth running of the filming. If it wasn't for his often quick thinking, there could of been some rather embarrassing issues occur.

Also he was central to negotiating a very good deal regarding publicity to Wells (he also got a credit, but listed after my name...).

After all that I was presented out..... went over the friends house for supper as I had to take them to the airport early in the morning.

The curry was mild but the signatures annoyed me!!

I actually got the whole day off on Tuesday!! Haven't had a day off during the week for a while. Believe me, I needed a break!!

Had a fantastic lie in until about 1100hrs. Was then woken by a call from a mate of mine, Simon Selby, reminding me about meeting for lunch.

So we went for our customary lunchtime curry. Normally, I'd have a madras strength dish....however at lunchtime - I go for mild!

After that I popped into the Council office to update my diary. Then it was off for a presentation regarding video eMailing etc. Was a very good tool and can see loads of possibilities for it.

I then spent most of the evening collecting the necessary signatures for my election campaign in May. It is an over the top system to stand for election. Most of the paper work is just not needed!!

After all that, went to a mate of mine - Rob Jones - who cooked me dinner. Was great to catch up with Rob. He lives in Glastonbury, so am not able to see him as often as I should.

Ann Wain's funeral

I have been informed by the family today that Ann will have here funeral on Tuesday 3rd April 2007.

The service will be held at St Mary Magdalene Church, Wookey Hole at 11:30am.

Family flowers only and donations via Hill's Funeral Directors of Wells.

All cheer the sports....no booing at the back!

Finally got to today!!

Had a fairly quiet day in Pickwicks. Most mondays are much slower trade wise in the city.

This evening my Chaplain and I hosted a reception for the sports clubs in Wells. It was a way of saying thank you for the service they do for the city and community.

All of the clubs have to face a burden in regards to laws and insurance requirements. Some of them are sensible, some of which I think justify other people's jobs!!

Anyway, all of these clubs represent Wells when they compete. So it is vital that they show the city off in it's best light.

Some of the clubs are very small and are always looking for venues and new team members. As a result of this evening, I have been invited to visit most of the clubs....

I did explain to them all, that my sporting career failed to take off - let alone to be resurrected!!!

hhmmmmm.......!!!!

Legal Service is all about dressing up.....

On Sunday, the Mayoress and I attended the Legal Service in Wells Cathedral.

I always enjoy this service, as it is full of pomp and circumstance. All of the Councillors (from Wells) were robed, as were members of the Somerset Judiciary. Also in attendance, were several Mayor's from around the county.

A slight hiccup in the service, when some of the Mayor's sat in the wrong place!! This meant that my Chaplain had to sit in another pew!!! Sorry Lavinia.

After the service, we joined the out going High Sheriff for dinner. I would like to thank both Brig. Alistair Fife and his wife Dee for their service to the City over the year.

The office of High sheriff dates back to over 1000yrs! The role is now ceremonial, however the High Sheriff does have a role in liaising with the judiciary. The post lasts for one year and does not attract an allowance or expenses!!!!

Wow...cool room

Had a late spurt on Saturday after a very droll morning! Trade was good over all but patchy!

After a quick change at home, I went to the opening of Wells City FC Function Suite. The new room is the converted changing rooms. Believe me, you'll notice a difference.

I was very proud that a local club had invested so much time and money into the project. It'll not only add to the club - but also the local community.

Well done.....

During the evening, some of the team players tried to 'spoof' me. This is a Somerset game played with coins. Was up for the challenge - but they thought otherwise!!

Emma flys east to Japan......good luck!

Update for Friday..... late as usual!!

Spent most of Friday working very hard as the first of the large Easter visitor numbers hit Wells! Was good fun and everyone was on their knees at the end of it!

In the evening ten of us joined one of my best friend's farewell dinner. Emma Dance is taking part in the Rotary Exchange programme to Kyoto in Japan. The trip is fully funded by Rotary.

The visit is over four weeks long and will truly be a life changing experience. Good luck Emma on your wonderful journey.

Sadly we couldn't find a local sushi bar, so the Chinese in Wells had to do!!

For more information on the visit, click here. A permanent link will be on my Wells Blogroll.

Mayors Diary for 22nd March 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

This week I received some very shocking and upsetting news. Ann Wain, who was an excellent member of staff and a good supporter of my Mayoralty, died this week.

Ann had a wonderful range of talents and skills which not only benefited my business, but also meant I was able to attend many of the day time functions to which I was invited. Ann said to me before becoming Mayor that she would help out at work when ever necessary. This often meant staying for long hours working under pressure with me out of the business. She did it all without complaint.

I could then concentrate on doing my duty without worrying about work. Believe me, when you’re doing the job as Mayor, you need as little worry as possible.

I’ll miss Ann for her humour, conversation, honesty, dedication and support. I know that is reflected amongst my other members of staff in Pickwicks.

Over the past week I’ve attended 4 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Tuesday, I received the ‘Loving Cup of England’ into the City. The cup is being passed around to over 50 cities across England. The idea is to promote community spirit amongst the peoples of our great cities. The cup will complete it’s journey on St. Georges Day in Westminster. More on the event can be found on my blog, www.mow633.blogspot.com.

On Wednesday I had two engagements which were AGM’s. The first was the AGM for Abbeyfield, which this year celebrated it’s 50th anniversary. This is an excellent society which really does support elderly people whilst retaining their independents.

The second AGM was for Macmillan Support. At this meeting I was asked and elected to become the Wells branch Vice Chairman. Macmillan Support is one of my charities.

On Monday the Mayoress, my Chaplain and Cllr Maureen Brandon hosted a reception for the Governors and Heads of the Blue School. This was to say thankyou for the work they do.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, Youth Media project, the Almshouses, opening the Wells City FC Function Room and a reception for the sports clubs of Wells.

007 - Licence to watch again.... he is the same build as me (honest)

It was Market Day today in Wells. So loads of people buzzing around the City.

Spent some time today sorting out Mayoral events with my Diary Secretary, over the phone. However, got it all sorted.

Had a slight problem towards the end of the day, as a handle for a tap fell off, so had great difficulty stopping the tap before we had a flood! Anyway, managed to do that!!!

After work, and a quick pint in The City Arms, finally got to Tesco. I brought the necessaries including washing powder! Also brought some pizza for Julie (the Mayoress), Martin (her husband) and myself. Took a little while going around the store as I met some people who hadn't heard the dramatic news about Anne Wain.

When I got home, went over to Julie & Martin's, where we enjoyed the pizza's and a good chat about everything.

Also had the opportunity to watch 'James Bond: Casino Royale'. I first saw it in Wells Cinema, now watching the DVD. Nothing can quite beat watching a Bond movie in a cinema...but still a very good film!

After all that, went home and chatted with my very tired Mum..... then went to bed (after updating my blog that is)!!

Wednesday 21 March 2007

Forgot Tesco AGAIN..... but remembered the interview!

Was very busy from the moment we opened today!

Our main opposition closed for most of the day due to a water leak! I do feel sorry for them, as we had that once and it ain't nice! Anyway, their customers experienced our coffee...had a few converts!!!

Spent most of the afternoon updating my diary and arranging the Civic Service in April. Should be a very good service, representing the whole city.

Forgot to go to Tesco today, as I need to get some bits....must do that tomorrow! I always seem to remember to go when I'm at home....by which time it's too late.

At 1830hrs, I was interviewed by the Wells Media Project. This is an initiative that I helped with the concept of. It's main aim is to involve young people who are enjoy 'media'. They are then offered the opportunity to report on real stories from a young person's view point.

Already, the scheme has been backed by local business' and Mendip District Council. My interview was based upon my thoughts on young people in Wells. The interview will be typed up and distributed as any other story would be. Also, extracts will be broadcast on the Strood Collage radio station!!

If you have a story that you'll like the project to cover, please eMail: wymp@hotmail.co.uk. A permanent link is on my 'Wells Blogroll'.

I'm just soooooo celeb these days............

Blue School reception

This evening the Mayoress, my Chaplain and Cllr. Maureen Brandon hosted a reception for the Blue School Governors and Heads. This was the last in the trio for the schools.

Again, it was to say thank you for all of the work they do for the community.

I would of normally hosted the reception, however after the day's news - I didn't think it appropriate.

Ann Wain

Today was one of the most horrendous day's of my Mayoral year.

After arriving back from Hedge End late this morning, Julie (who works for me) told me that Ann Wain had died.

Ann was a truly exceptional member of staff. She was very dedicated, loyal, trustworthy and humorous. Her death was completely unexpected.

Ann promised me at the beginning of my year, that she would support me throughout. This sometimes meant managing Pickwicks, working extra hours or taking on some responsibility. She kept to her word.

Without Ann doing this, I could never have done so many of the engagements I was invited to. Ann was a good supporter of mine and backed me 100%.

So I owe Ann an awful lot, but will miss her personally.

I know all of the staff at Pickwicks will miss her; as well as the many customers who knew Ann and the high quality work she produced.

Mother's Day

On Sunday morning, I drove back to Hedge End to spend some time with my Mum!

This was a great day which I also got to see my 11 month old Nephew, Stanley. He has changed so much. He is starting to 'talk' and enjoys crawling all over the place.

Was also good to catch up with my brothers, Andrew and Matthew - also with my sister-in-law Janine.

We spent most of the afternoon walking around a local park, before heading over to Andrew & Janine's for dinner.

Was going to update my blog at my Mum's, but had problem's signing on......

Great gig.... Peelers are too watch!

Friday was a very busy day. Didn't help that one of the checkouts went a bit wobbly (again).

Anyway survived the experience!!!

In the evening, my friend Emma and I went to Glastonbury to watch a gig performed by a local band called the Peelers!

They were great! One of the band members, Ken, works with Emma. It was great to see a band playing live and so many people listening and enjoying the music.

The gig was at the Backpackers of Glastonbury (or The Crown pub) which ever you like to call it.

To read more about the band, please click here. I have placed a permanent link in my 'Wells websites' listings.

A service to celebrate......

On Thursday we had a moderate day in Pickwicks.... I'm desperately trying to think as I'm typing this four days after the date!! Again, it's down to a busy social and Mayoral diary!!

In the evening I had a meeting with Rev. Peter Farrell who is the vicar of the Civic Church, St. Cuthbert's.

We had a very interesting meeting regarding a service to celebrate Wells and the organisations that help the city run. Peter has so many good ideas!

The service will be held at St. Cuthbert's Church on 22nd April 2007 at 1500hrs. Please come along if you can.

Mayor's Diary for 15th March 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

The count down has begun. I have now only 10 weeks (and 2 days) left of my Mayoralty. So if I don’t do it all now….it ain’t going to happen. I have a very packed diary, but if you have any other ideas; please let me know.

Over the past week I’ve attended 6 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Tuesday I attended the Twinning Association AGM. As Mayor I’m the President. My role was to open the meeting and conduct the election of Officers. Well done to Bob Reynolds and his team for representing the City in our twinned towns. The meeting discussed less formal ‘friendship agreements’ with other towns in Poland and Germany.

I had a nice surprise on Thursday, as my brother Andrew popped in on his way to a business meeting. I have two younger brothers and Andrew is the one in the middle. Sadly, didn’t have too much time to talk as I was very busy at work.

On Friday I was invited to give out awards to pupils from Stoberry Park School for their efforts in improving handwriting. For those who had the best improvement, I gave them a very nice pen. Many others who met their targets won certificates.

Well done to all the pupils and teachers for focusing upon an important area. Some of the handwriting I encounter (including my own) needs considerable improvement.

Later that evening, the Mayoress and I attended a party for my Chaplain in the Mayor’s Parlour. I’m so proud to have Lavinia Byrne as my Chaplain, she does an excellent job. More on the party can be found on my blog, http://www.mow633.blogspot.com/.

Saturday evening I hosted a party for Stephanie Webb to celebrate her birthday.

Monday evening the Mayoress and I hosted a reception for the Heads and Governors of Wells Cathedral School. This was the second in the trio of receptions for Governors to say thank you for all of the hard work they do.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, the Grand Tour of the Loving Cup, Abbeyfield AGM, Macmillan Support AGM and a reception for The Blue School Heads and Governors.

Two AGM's and some washing up!!

Had a good day in Pickwicks today....even had the Mayor doing the washing up!!! How many Mayor's do you know have dishpan hands???

I had two AGM's to attend this evening.

First off at 1830hrs, I attended a AGM for the Abbeyfield Society (Wells). This is a marvellous society, as it has a series of homes across the UK where elderly (often lonley) people can rent a room and lead very independent lives.

The homes (two in Wells) have a mixture of residents - none of which have been means tested (which I think is a welcome change). They all lead their own lives but happen to live in the same large house. As Mayor, I'm President of the Wells Society. It is an enormous privilege to represent this organisation, especially as it celebrated the UK 50th anniversary.

After that AGM, I attended the Macmillan Support Wells Branch AGM. It was held in The Swan Hotel.

Macmillan Support is one of my charities for the year. It is great to have such an active branch in Wells. Quite shockingly, there isn't another branch for about 30 miles! So Wells is quite high profile in central Somerset.

Macmillan supported my Mum and Dad when my Dad was dying of cancer. To help repay the debt, I agreed to become Vice Chairman for the Wells Branch. To find out more about Macmillan, please click here else see my 'useful websites' for a link.

After those meetings I met up with mates and went for a drink.....

Mayor's Diary for 8th March 2007 - as published in the Wells Journal

This week at work a member of my staff Nathan Truckle, celebrated his 18th birthday. It took me back 16½ years to when I celebrated it. I had a family & friends BBQ. I hope you join with me in wishing Nathan a Happy Birthday.

Over the past week I’ve attended 7 events, functions and meetings as your Mayor.

On Wednesday I attended the relaunch of Alex Scott Hairdressing. The salon had been refitted and updated. Proceeds from the raffle they held went to Comic Relief. For note, in the raffle I won some makeup bags (including samples) – which I gave straight to the Mayoress.

On Saturday my Chaplain and I attended a concert in the Town Hall in aid of Macmillan Support. The concert was performed by the Glastonbury Male Voice Choir. It was an excellent concert, filled with various songs – including a song called ‘Judith the Librarian (who is a strict vegetarian)’. More on the concert can be found in my blog www.mow633.blogspot.com.

On Sunday morning my Chaplain and I attended a Civic Service held by the Elim Church in the Town Hall. The service was to celebrate those people who work on the front line of our public services. Those who do jobs many of us would hate to do – like social workers, care workers, police officers and waste collectors. We can’t run our economy or any other part of our lives without these very important roles being filled.

In the afternoon, we attended the Wells Amateur Boxing event in Kudos. There was a mix of skills and talent on show. All of the bouts were very well refereed and you can see the real skills needed to box in a ring. Having a good punch is only part of the skill….also need to be thinking two moves ahead.

On Monday, The Mayoress, my Chaplain and I hosted a reception in the Town Hall for the Governors and Head Teachers of all of the Primary Schools in and around the city. It was just one way of saying thankyou to all those who put so much into children’s education for no pay, but a lot of commitment.

Over the next week my diary includes Council meetings, the Twinning Association AGM, Radio Link meeting, Handwriting Awards at Stoberry School, ATC Table Top sale and a reception for Wells Cathedral School Governors and Heads.

Loving Cup passes through another great City!

Finally got to today's blog entry....after updating the weekend!

Am usually off for Tuesday afternoon, so that I can update my diary. Sadly with two people off, not able to do!

Had an average day trading wise in Pickwicks. Although it did get very busy this morning.

Mid afternoon, I had a rather unusual engagement in the Mayor's Parlour. It was the tour of the 'Loving Cup of England'.

The 'Loving Cup' is being brought around to virtually every City in England. The idea is to foster links and community bonds across England.

The cup itself, is fairly new. It is shaped like a football trophy and is very very heavy. Mr Bruno Peeks OBE started off proceedings by presenting me with the cup.

I then accepted it on behalf of the City. I was then presented with a flag for the City to fly on St. Georges Day. After a brief speech, I then took a sip out of the cup and passed it around the room.

All had a great time and it was nice to be part of something different. The 'Loving Cup' will finish it's journey on St. Georges Day at a Gala Dinner, hosted by the Lord Mayor of Westminster.

After all that - back to work......

Nathan is going......

Two down again on Monday, so under pressure AGAIN in Pickwicks.

Some sad news as Nathan Truckle, one of my longest serving member of staff had tendered his notice!! He wants to work on a building site, building walls or something! It's always annoying when an excellent member of staff leaves, especially someone with so much skill and character. Never mind - I suspect he'll miss us (and me) when he is out in the freezing rain, snow, wind and sweltering heat.

Anyway, we got through a very busy day. Many thanks to Julie who put together a smashing buffet for the evening reception!

The reception was the second in a trio of receptions to celebrate the work of Governors especially (and Heads as well). This time it was the turn of Wells Cathedral school.

Governors, whether in state or public schools, all work very hard for no pay.

Without these people, all of the, sometimes, mundane work would have to be done by front line teachers and heads.

The Mayoress and my Chaplain attended, as well as many from the Cathedral School. The School can boast many ex-pupils doing jobs with film directors and many top orchestras around the world. The great thing is, they all say they were schooled in Wells (Somerset, UK).

Great bit of PR....and all free!

Typed my diary for the Wells Journal...then off to bed.....

Really enjoyed meeting Vicky

Had a bit of a rest on Sunday.

After getting up - which took rather a long time - I headed back down to the Mayor's Parlour to clean up after Lavinia's and Steph's parties.

There wasn't that much to do - a little washing up and setting things straight. Managed to get the right bowls back to the right people.... I think!

In the evening, I went to Bristol for dinner with Chris a mate of mine. I got to meet his friend Vicky and had a wonderful meal for which I didn't have to do anything.....wow!!

Vicky has had a varied life which included working in the Bahamas for a diving school. Vicky is defiantly full of life and doesn't really want to stand still......

Work - Pizza - Bed...... in that order!

Saturday was soooo busy I wasn't able to attend the opening of the Table Top Sale for the ATC in the Town Hall.

Pickwicks had a slow start, but ended up flying at full throttle towards the end.

Later that evening, I hosted a party in the Mayor's Parlour for Stephine Webb, about 8 attended). This time, I didn't need to dress formally.

We brought some pizza from ASK next door and enjoyed wine and cava all evening. It was a great opportunity to just chill out!!

Steph appeared to enjoy herself as did the rest of the group.....

Then it was off to bed as I was rather tired!!!!

Handwriting is always going to be tops......

I know the 'late again' excuse is becoming rather regular....but it's true - everything is a bit full on at the mo!! So I'm truly sorry for the delay in updating my blog.....

On Friday, we had a full compliment of staff in at Pickwicks. This was after a week were two key members had the dreaded lurgi which is floating around!

Mid morning, I attended Stoberry Park School in Wells. This was to give out prizes for their latest focus upon handwriting.

I thought this was an excellent idea, as handwriting among adults (including moi), is sometimes rather awful. Although the pupils may not either care or know it yet.... but good handwriting will benefit them greatly in the big horrible real world!

I gave pens out to pupils who exceeded their targets for handwriting and certificates to those who did very well at handwriting. The others met or were slightly under their target.

Speaking of targets, I never had any at primary school! I don't think I even knew what a target was (except for something you aim a bow & arrow at)!

Anyway, after the assembly, which included Parents, we all sang a very jolly song called 'Everybody's Building'. It really did sum up what the school is doing and hopes to do.

Later that evening, The Mayoress and I hosted a party for my chaplain, Dr Lavinia Byrne. I was so proud to help not only a dear friend, but a wise advisor and strong supporter. About 30 people attended. The invite list included Lavinia's family from France.

As the party was a very important date, I dressed in my Morning Suit and had the Maces on display. For the French, I even put on my red robes...any excuse!

Radio Link meet.... ooohhh!

A very long day today in Pickwicks.......really need to have a break.

Anyway, the day went very well!

This evening, there was a Radio Link meeting in Pickwicks. The meeting was hosted by the Police in order to train other radio users.

Wells Radio Link is a fantastic award winning project, where business' can hire a radio (CB) to contact each other in case of assault or shoplifting etc.

The great advantage to the scheme is that the Police back it 100%, so they even carry around a radio.

The evening went well and we all enjoyed a buffet afterwards, kindly made by Ann!

After all that, a group of us went to Cafe Romna for a good curry!!!

Got in at about 2300hrs!

Tuesday 6 March 2007

Twinned with manic.....as usual

A very busy day today!! I still have two people off and we were run over this morning!!

This morning there was only Katchina, Lois and myself in! We were full to the brim by 1030hrs which meant an awful lot of drinks, croissants and crumpets! In fact we were so busy, I couldn't get to the phone for help! It didn't help of course that our phone still isn't working (after I dropped it in my cup of tea on Friday). It still rings, but we cant answer it.

So the phone kept ringing, I had about 15 missed calls and several messages on my mobile. It was manic but great fun. It is very pleasing to see that Pickwicks has become the choice of many people in the city.

It all calmed down a bit, when our new phoned and extra staff arrived.

Nathan has a serious cold which I think is linked to him being out until 0830hrs Sunday morning on his 18th brithday bash.

At 1800hrs, I attended a planning meeting for the YMCA Party in the Mayor's Parlour. It is going to be an excellent evening. All those involved have put in so much effort. Can't wait....

There was meant to be a LATs meeting in the Indictment Room (Town Hall). However, that started at 1830hrs so was unable to attend.

After the YMCA meeting, I attended the Wells Twinning Association AGM in the Little Theatre. This organisation manages the twinning between the city and Bad Durkheim (Germany) and Parry Le Monial (France). As Mayor, I am it's President for the year.

So it is my job to chair the AGM until the Chairman is either elected or re-elected. It was no surprise that Bob Reynolds was once again elected as Chairman. He has put so much time and effort into it all. Well done to Bob and his team.

I did promise the AGM that I would place a link on my blog. So, if you want to find out more information on the Wells Twinning Association, please click here. I have place a permanent link into my 'Wells Blogroll'.

Celebration of Primary School Governors

Had a very busy day in terms of workload in Pickwicks. We were a couple of staff down today - so we had to work a bit harder to compensate.

This evening The Mayoress, my Chaplain and I hosted a reception in the Parkes Room of the Town Hall for all of the Primary School Governors and Head Teachers. All of the primary schools in and around the city were invited.

We had at least one representative from each school. According to many that attended, it was the first time that all Governors were invited together! This was shocking, as most said they benefited from speaking to other Governors in similar schools. Yet another first for the current Mayor!!!!!

I wanted to invite all of these people for a couple of reasons. First, all of the schools (in or out of the city) always invite the incumbent Mayor to any official function. Secondly, all of the Governors give their time and commitment voluntarily.

If it wasn't for these people doing so much for the schools, the burden would vastly increase on the Heads and Teachers. The admin load on these skilled people is already great, so anything to remove a little stress is welcome.

The wider community, I think, really does appreciate the work Governors do. I didn't realise that the term of a Governor is only four years - then its time for re-election.

I hope they all enjoyed the reception. Special thanks has to go to Gill, Stan, Rosemary, Len and Maureen for their help this evening.....

Sunday 4 March 2007

How ingenious...another award winning company in Wells!!! Cool...

Have just heard about a fantastic young company based in Wells, which won an award last year.

The company is called 'The Ingenious Marketing Office' and it specialises in marketing services to schools.

The company was selected as award winner of the ‘most successful startup’ category by the Federation of Small Businesses.

Well done to all involved. To find out more about The Ingenious Marketing Office, click here. I have added a permanent link to my 'Wells Blogroll'.

I'm not about to throw in the towel....

A rest on Sunday??? Not a chance!

Up at 0830hrs to let the Elim Church in to the Town Hall, to set up for their Civic Service. The service, which started at 1030hrs, was dedicated to all of those people who work hard in the community in 'front line' jobs (care workers, policemen, social workers etc).

The service was lead by Pastor Stephen Fowler, who was one of Wells' youngest Mayors (age of 28 in late 80's).

During the service, I was interviewed on why I became Mayor etc. I thought it was going to be a 'Paxman' style mauling.....but he let me off as it was a Sunday!!!

All had a great time. The children went down stairs during the service to produce a collage on the theme. At the end they produced a 4m long collage on Wells and it's services! It was wonderful, I appeared on it twice (once as a stick man). I'm not too sure where the Wells Airport is, but everything else reflected life in Wells. I intend on hanging the collage during the next (and last) City Council meeting in April.

To see what the Elim Church does, please click here. I have placed a permanent link on the 'Wells Blogroll'.

After lunch and updating my blog from the last couple of days, I had a complete change of tack!

My Chaplain and I attended the Wells Amateur Boxing Match, held in Kudos. We were very lucky to also be joined by our MP, David Heathcoat-Amory.

There were 15 matches planned, but sadly one of the clubs didn't show. However, those who were there more than made up! Some of the matches were some young teenagers. They showed a lot of skill and determination.

When the older ones came on, it was a different matter! Still a lot of skill and determination - added with real power behind the punches. Some of the matches were superb.

I was very impressed with the way it was refereed and the rules were very stringent. Kudos was packed with people from around the City and beyond. It looks like they may have stumbled across a popular piece of local entertainment - for regular matches. We'll have to wait and see.

I was lucky to have David Heathcoat-Amory MP near to me, explaining the rules and tactics. Mr Heathcoat-Amory has always supported boxing; indeed used to play it.

Anyway, back at home now....calming down!

They are very particular in WsM

An update on a previous blog entry.....

On Thursday I was talking about skittles and my former boss being involved! However, I now have the link and some corrections!

First of the link for the skittles results, click here. This is the Weston super Mare league skittles website. A permanent link can be found on my 'useful websites' section.

Secondly, I've been told that Tony is STILL the Captain of his team (and not a past Captain).

Third, the 's' in 'super (Weston super Mare) is lower case and not upper case as I had it!!

oooohhh get you....... You would of thought that being mentioned in my blog would have been enough?????

Judith the Librarian....was a strict vegetarian! Luckily she missed out on the bacon sandwiches

We were short staffed and very busy in Pickwicks on Saturday. Although everyone rallied around and we were able to operate very effectively as a team! Well done to all!

During the morning I attended a Conservative Group Meeting in Shepton Mallet. The meeting to discuss the forth coming Mendip elections. The meeting also included new candidates as well as existing ones.

It was a good meeting where we discussed our record, strategy, the likely attack from the main opposition and general points on campaigning. Everyone was very motivated and had loads of ideas. The meeting started off with some bacon sandwiches - which went down very well.

I then returned to a very busy Pickwicks....as mentioned above! Had my lunch at about 1630hrs this time - almost in time for closing.

In the evening I attended, as Mayor, a concert for one of my Mayoral charities; Macmillan Support. The concert was performed by the Glastonbury Male Voice Choir. It was an excellent evening. I've never heard a live Male Choir before - a true eduction. The songs were all perfect for the evening and venue.

The acoustics in the Town Hall were designed for groups such as the Glastonbury Male Choir. Sadly, with more modern music, bands or discos - the acoustics aren't as clever. During the evening we had some light hearted and quiet amusing solo numbers. The one I liked the best was called 'Judith the Librarian' (who was a strict vegetarian). Very funny indeed.

The one thing I really love about any concert is watching the conductor. I think to conduct any sort of band or choir takes great skill. It's all of the movements and instructions they give has to be directly in time with the music....else there could be confusion. I haven't got the attention span for such a job....at least I'm honest!!

More can be found about the Glastonbury Male Choir, by clicking here. I have placed a permanent link on my 'Useful Website' section.
